Die schöne Müllerin ist wohl „der“ romantische Liedzyklus schlechthin. Textdichter Wilhelm Müller reiht großzügig einen romantischen Topos an den anderen: das Wandern, blaue Blumen, Mond und Sterne und natürlich die unglückliche Liebe bis in den Tod. Und all das in schlichtem Volksliedton. „Der“ Liedkomponist schlechthin Franz Schubert schreibt zu diesen Texten eine Musik, die das scheinbar volksliedhaft Naive aufgreift, dabei aber so unergründlich tief anrührend und aufwühlend bleibt, dass einem dieser wandernde, liebende, leidende Müllersbursche ganz nah und vertraut erscheint und jedes Wort der Dichtung wahrhaftig wird.
Tenor Cornel Frey, Ensemblemitglied der Deutschen Oper am Rhein und dem Wiesbadener Publikum durch seine kongenial-wahnwitzige Darstellung in „Le Grand Macabre“ bekannt, beschreibt die „Schöne Müllerin“ als „ein Werk, das man ein ganzes Sängerleben mit sich trägt, sich immer wieder neu darauf einlässt, daran wächst, daran scheitert. “Die schöne Müllerin” is perhaps the quintessential Romantic song cycle. Lyricist Wilhelm Müller weaves together one Romantic motif after another: wandering, blue flowers, the moon and stars, and, of course, love so unfulfilled that it ultimately leads to death – all expressed in a tone reminiscent of folk song. Franz Schubert, the master of Lied composition, set these texts to music, embracing their seemingly naive simplicity while infusing them with a depth of feeling so profound that his miller’s boy – wandering, loving, and suffering – feels strikingly close and familiar, and every word of the poem seems to ring true.
Tenor Cornel Frey, a member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and well known to Wiesbaden audiences for his brilliantly eccentric performance in “Le Grand Macabre”, describes the song cycle as “a work that stays with you throughout your singing life, one that you return to again and again, growing with it, even failing with it. An enduring masterpiece that one can never really tire of, either as a performer or as a listener”. He will be accompanied on piano by Swiss pianist Olive Wetter. Actor Christian Klischat will read a selection poems by Wilhelm Müller which Schubert left uncomposed in his composition of the cycle.
