Die Star-Choreografin Constanza Macras schafft eine fesselnde Performance zwischen Tanz und Schauspiel mit jungen südafrikanischen Darsteller*innen.
„The Visitors“ taucht ein in die Welt der Slasher-Filme, ein Subgenre des Horrorfilms mit eigenen narrativen Codes und einem eigenen ästhetischen Stil. Die Protagonist*innen dieser Filme sind Jugendliche. Ohne Eltern oder andere erwachsene Helfende müssen sie alleine die Monster bekämpfen. Die Killer sind zumeist das Ergebnis der Schrecken der Vergangenheit: “The past will come back to haunt you” (Die Vergangenheit wird dich heimsuchen), heißt es.
In „The Visitors“ werden diese Themen im südafrikanischen Kontext beleuchtet: Die Abwesenheit der Eltern erhält eine besondere Konnotation in Folge der staatlich orchestrierten Zerstörung der Familienstrukturen während der Apartheid. Dazu sehen wir das „Grauen“ in alltäglichen Situationen wie dem Umgang mit Bürokratie und Korruption.
Durch nicht-lineare Erzählungen und humorvolle Assoziationen versuchen die jugendlichen Protagonist*innen, sich aus dem Griff dieser alten Monster zu befreien, die unerbittliche Wiederkehr der Vergangenheit abzustreifen und neue Räume zum Denken und Hoffen zu schaffen.

Star choreographer Constanza Macras fuses dance and drama in a striking new performance featuring young South African performers.
“The Visitors” delves into the unsettling world of slasher films, a horror sub-genre defined by its distinct narrative codes and aesthetics. In these films, teenagers are hunted and killed, while parents and adult figures are absent or powerless to protect them. The young protagonists must face the monsters alone. Although the killers may appear as faceless forces of violence, they often embody the traumas of the past. As one of the recurring themes warns: “The past will come back to haunt you”. In “The Visitors”, these themes take on deeper significance in the South African context, where the legacy of apartheid’s state-orchestrated destruction of family structures still lingers – its horror not just cinematic but deeply embedded in bureaucracy, corruption, and systemic exclusion. But through non-linear storytelling and dark humour, the young protagonists struggle to free themselves from the ghosts of history. They seek to move beyond the relentless cycle of the past into a more fluid, interconnected sense of time, where new spaces for reflection and hope can emerge.
